Welcome Seamus Michael

Holy Hiatus Batman!

Wow... it's been a while. Clearly there is no chance I can catch up on all that has occurred in the time since my last post, so I'll just start with the birth of our newest little family member.

On September 16th at 8:06 am, we welcomed Seamus Michael to our family. (That's pronounced Shay-mus for those who may be wondering) He weighed 7 lbs 10 oz, which was a shock considering McKenna weighed 9 lbs 2 oz when she was born. We were expecting him to be at least as big. However, he's catching up fast!

At Seamus' 2 week appointment, we found out that one of the tests in his newborn screen had come back abnormal. It was a marker that indicated he may have a very scary metabolic disorder called Gluteric Acidemia or GA-1. We had to have his newborn screen redone and have a urine test done to test for this disorder. However, while we were waiting on the results (2 weeks) we were told that even if both of these tests come back normal/negative, we would still have to have a skin biopsy done to completely rule it out. So, both the repeat blood screen and the urine test came back normal and we're still waiting on the biopsy results. They told us it could take up to 2 months to get the results. It's been 5 weeks now. The waiting and uncertainty have been very difficult and we're desperate for an answer. Obviously we are hoping and praying with all our might that we are told everything looks normal and that we simply experienced a false positive, but we also have to prepare ourselves for the fact that we may be told Seamus does have GA-1. At least we would have an answer and start the process of wrapping our heads around it. Thankfully it seems as though this disorder is treatable through diet, but it comes with many risks and potential for complications. I suppose we'll cross that bridge IF we get to it. **Edited to add that we received WONDERFUL news the day before Thanksgiving; Seamus does not have GA-1. We feel so fortunate. There are many families who don't enjoy such a wonderful outcome.**

A few pics from his first couple of months...

In the meantime, we're enjoying out newly expanded family. Seamus is doing wonderful... eating like crazy, and getting bigger by the minute. He's just started smiling more and more these past few days and I just love it. He is an absolute doll. McKenna has been so great with her new brother. She has loved her little "Shay-shay", as she calls him, from day one. She loves to give him kisses on his head. She routinely comes over while I'm changing his diaper on the couch and will lean over and kiss him on the head. She then looks up at me with her cute little puckered lips, offering a kiss for Mommy too. Life is good.
